Military expert Mykhailo Zhirokhov discussed the significance of the Russian drone attack on central Kyiv on Jan. 1 during an interview with Radio NV on Jan. 2.
Military expert Mykhailo Zhirokhov said the Russian drone attack on Kyiv on Jan. 1 was unconventional, noting they launched Shahed drones in waves without decoys, exhausting air defense systems.
He described the attack as a demonstration to show Russia could bypass Kyiv’s defenses and reach the city center, emphasizing that the goal wasn’t to hit military targets but to display their ability to strike deeply into Kyiv.
Zhirokhov explained the attack targeted weaker points in the air defense system, specifically from the Chernihiv region, where air defense was less dense.
On New Year’s Eve, Ukraine faced multiple drone attacks, including one that partially destroyed a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district, killing two and injuring seven.
