Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an emotional, wide-ranging interview to American podcaster Lex Fridman, whose parents emigrated from Kyiv and Kharkiv to the United States in the 1990s.

Lex Fridman, a U.S. citizen, artificial intelligence researcher, and computer scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the host of the Lex Fridman Podcast, which he launched in 2018. The show has featured high-profile guests, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Fridman’s father, Alexander Fridman, was a renowned plasma physicist born in Kyiv. He later worked in Moscow, Russia, and Tajikistan. His mother, originally from Kharkiv, and the family emigrated to the United States in 1994 when Lex was about 11 years old.

Fluent in Russian but not Ukrainian, Fridman proposed an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in late 2024, offering to travel to Kyiv. Zelenskyy responded, “See you in Ukraine,” in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
