French Socialist lawmakers have expressed concern over President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments urging Ukrainians to engage in “realistic discussions on territorial issues” to resolve the war with Russia, a Jan. 8 declaration on the French Socialist Party’s website states.
“This statement [by Macron] is completely untimely, as it is full of insinuations and forces lawmakers to express their deep concern,” the declaration reads.
The lawmakers called on Macron to refrain from making statements that could harm international relations.
“No one can agree to the annexation of parts of Ukraine’s territory by Russia. We must respect international law, which is our only compass. In this regard, only Ukraine can decide whether to open negotiations and under conditions it defines itself,” the lawmakers stated.
