Ukraine hopes to obtain iron-clad security guarantees and end the war this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Jan. 10.
He made these remarks in an interview with Italian TV broadcaster RaiNews24, which was published on YouTube by the President’s Office.
“Our dream is to obtain security guarantees this year [which would prevent Russia from launching another invasion] and to end the war this year,” said Zelenskyy.
“We will do everything we can to achieve this.”
He also mentioned that Ukraine and Europe need serious security guarantees, and the United States should apply pressure on Russia.
“For us, it is very important that peace comes; we want peace above all,” the president continued.
“And it’s understandable because we are the most affected, losing people primarily… But before making any agreements, it is crucial that there are serious security guarantees. These should be guarantees not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe. They ensure protection for Ukraine and security guarantees so that Russia does not return…”
He emphasized the purpose of security guarantees is to ensure that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin or any of his successors will never invade Ukraine again.
