The capture of North Korean soldiers by Ukraine’s Defense Forces in Russia’s Kursk Oblast presents a strategic opportunity for Ukraine, Yevhen Yerin, Military Intelligence (HUR) representative told Radio Liberty on Jan. 13.
Yerin emphasized that taking North Korean troops prisoner is “a beneficial and necessary event” for Ukraine, which will be leveraged to its advantage.
He noted that the interrogations provide valuable intelligence and firsthand confirmation of North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Ukraine anticipated and prepared for this scenario, ensuring that intelligence and security services were equipped to handle the situation.
HUR is now investigating whether the North Korean regime will continue supplying troops to Russia, though no evidence yet suggests their deployment inside Ukraine itself.
