NATO membership is the only effective guarantee for Ukraine, dismissing any possible “alternatives” to joining the alliance, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, stated on Jan. 15 in an interview with European Pravda.
Sybiha also emphasized that Ukraine’s membership is “the cheapest way to ensure European security,” both for Ukraine and NATO itself.
“We’ve already tried ‘alternative options.’ We saw the failure of the Budapest Memorandum. Creating any ‘gray zones’ only leads to further escalations. Therefore, Ukraine’s NATO membership is an unwavering priority and the only effective security guarantee for our country,” the minister stressed.
He also mentioned that a foreign colleague who attended the 2008 Bucharest Summit, where a decision could have been made to grant Ukraine and Georgia a NATO Membership Action Plan, recounted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin directly threatened European leaders with occupying Ukraine if such a decision were made.
