1/21/2025 — Zelenskyy in Davos: Europe must unite on defense, not compromise with emotional tactics

European countries must develop a shared security and defense policy instead of playing on public emotions by suggesting that defense spending should come at the expense of healthcare or pensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 21. 

“We need a unified European security and defense policy. All European countries must be ready to spend as much on security as is genuinely necessary, not just as much as they’ve been used to spending during years of doubt. If defense requires 5% of GDP, then let it be 5%. There’s no need to manipulate people by claiming defense spending must come at the cost of healthcare or pensions—that’s unfair,” Zelenskyy said.

The president also noted uncertainty about whether Europe would participate in negotiations following the end of the war against Ukraine. However, he emphasized that China’s growing influence on Russia is already evident. He expressed gratitude to European nations for their continued support since the war began.
