U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy to discuss the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine, the U.S. State Department announced on Jan. 27.
The statement noted that both leaders expressed a shared commitment to beginning joint efforts to achieve their many mutual foreign policy objectives.
“They reaffirmed the depth of the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom and the critical nature of our partnership in addressing challenges such as the conflict in the Middle East, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the malign influence of China,” the statement read.
The conversation also covered collaborative initiatives, including the AUKUS partnership, which promotes free and open cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Trump’s “Peace plan” for Ukraine
On Nov. 6, The Wall Street Journal reported that advisers to Donald Trump had proposed various versions of a “peace plan” for Ukraine, which essentially freezes the front line. One version involves Ukraine pledging not to join NATO for 20 years.
