The United States has suspended the United for Ukraine (U4U) program, which allowed Ukrainians fleeing the war to temporarily settle in the country, the Voice of America reported on Jan. 28.
The decision to suspend the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s acceptance of Form I-134A applications, the online petition for assistance, and the Statement of Financial Support comes as part of the U.S. government’s efforts to secure its borders in accordance with the executive order issued on Jan. 20. It will remain in place until all pending applications are reviewed.
On Jan. 24, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ordered the suspension of several programs that allowed immigrants to stay in the country temporarily, including a key initiative for Ukrainians.
The move indicates the Trump administration’s broader strategy to curtail programs that allow temporary entry into the United States.
As of September 2023, more than 150,000 Ukrainians have entered the country through the U4U program.
