As a child, he ended up in the Bershad ghetto in the Vinnytsia Oblast, created by the Nazis during World War II, and survived only by a miracle. He witnessed the Nazis shoot his elder brother when he fell during forced labor and saw saw the bodies of hundreds of people who were killed.
In 2023, a Russian missile struck his home in Odesa. Mr. Roman and his wife, sheltering in the basement during the attack, could no longer recognize their 10th-floor apartment – everything was destroyed.
