2/4/2025 — Trump open to exchanging US military aid for mineral rights in Ukraine

The United States is looking to negotiate access to Ukraine’s rare earth metals in exchange for continued military aid, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Feb. 3.

Speaking at the White House, the president expressed interest in a deal that would compensate Washington for Ukraine aid expenditures.

“We’re telling Ukraine that they have very valuable rare earth metals…,” said Trump.

“We are giving them money on a vast scale, we are supplying arms, and the Europeans are lagging… It’s more important for them [Europeans] than it is for us, but they are far behind.”

“We want to make an agreement with Ukraine in which they will secure our aid with their minerals and other resources.” 

VOA correspondent Kateryna Lisunova reported that prior to this announcement, Trump had signed an order appointing retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg as the Special U.S. Representative for Ukraine. “We’ve made great progress regarding Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said, without elaborating.
