Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help!
Psalm 35:1-2
Every parent would agree that their child’s health puts many things into perspective. When I wrote my first public Facebook post about 30 hours before the full-scale invasion, it had words, “We want to schedule doctor’s appointments without wondering if we’d live to make it.” When I wrote it, I kept in mind a very specific situation. My son had an important doctor’s appointment we had been waiting for for about a month. We did make it that time. Less than 12 hours before the full-scale invasion. That city district was bombed that February, and I kept thinking about the hospital and our doctor. Thankfully, they were fine. Last weekend, we came there for another appointment. The first one in the three years of the full-scale war. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and flashbacks. It’s February again.
Yesterday, I was overcome with similar feelings. My son was scheduled for his tonsillectomy, which meant we needed to go to the clinic on the other side of the city and spend the night there. I knew we picked the best solution, and I knew we could trust the doctor and his team, but all the “what ifs” were haunting me – what if there’s an air raid, a blackout, a missile strike… As we got in the car on our way there, I reassured my son that we’d done all we could do on our part, but the most important thing was to let God take care of the things that were out of our control. I knew I needed to hear that.
And trusting God to take care of the things that are out of our control was exactly what I did when we woke up in the hospital room at 4 a.m. from the blasts of the explosion. Ballistic missiles were coming at Kyiv. I moved my drowsy son to the hallway and let him fall asleep on a chair, all the while praying for God’s mercy and protection.
So that’s how badly russia wants to end this war. Keep this picture in mind the next time someone tells you how wonderful it will be soon once the “negotiations” begin.
If you caught a rapist in action, would you shake his hand and offer negotiations or stop the violation first? Ukraine is being violated day and night, and all the empty promises of “common sense” are nothing else but a mockery. Do not be deceived.
At least we have the Lord who sees all and knows all, and His judgment will be just.
Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life!
Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me!
Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them away!
Psalm 35:4-5
