From: Bret Laird (Senior Pastor Calvary Bible Church) — For believers who are opining on Ukraine, may I gently suggest that…
…if you’re not aware that Ukraine is the Bible belt of Europe, if you don’t know that Bible-believing evangelical Christians in Ukraine enjoy excellent religious freedom and a friendly attitude from their government, if you are ignorant of the fact that Ukraine’s constitution and election laws expressly forbid holding elections during wartime, if you don’t know that it is standard practice to postpone elections during wars and other national emergencies, if you don’t know history well enough to know that England and other western democracies postponed elections while being bombed in WW2 for the same reasons Ukraine has had to do so, if you don’t understand how difficult it would be to provide an opportunity to vote for 10 million Ukrainian refugees dispersed literally around the world, if you think civilians gathering in large groups at specific places on a specific day is a good idea when they are being actively targeted by daily bombardments of drones, cruise missiles, artillery, and ballistic rockets, if you’re ignorant of the fact that the only candidate with even a miniscule chance to beat Zelenskiy in a presidential election is Zaluzhniy, if you had to google Zaluzhniy because you don’t know anything about Ukrainian politics, if you think the election of the general who humiliated Putin’s invading army would miraculously end the war, if you think appeasing dictators with “land for peace” deals didn’t work for Neville Chamberlain but will work this time, and if you think the “evil dictator” in this situation is the guy who 73% of Ukrainians voted for in a free and fair election rather than the KGB officer in the Kremlin who has been in power for 25 years and has killed or exiled every political opponent…
…maybe pouring salt on the wounds of the suffering, exposing your own ignorance, and unknowingly parroting the talking points of Kremlin state media isn’t the best way to use social media this week?
Friends, there is a reason why politically conservative missionaries and American military officers with extensive personal experience and knowledge of the region are rolling their eyes at the social media posts they’re seeing this week.
As has often been said, “You have the right to your own opinion, but you don’t have the right to your own facts.” Truth matters.
Those (like me) who are fluent in Russian and have been monitoring Kremlin state media for decades are alarmed that everyday Americans are believing and repeating Kremlin talking points we’ve been hearing from Moscow for years. And I am astounded that political conservatives in our government seem to be increasingly siding with the Kremlin.
It’s odd to feel I need to say this, but the Russian, North Korean, Chinese, Iranian alliance is NOT the side political conservatives should be backing!
