2/27/2025 — The deal over Ukraine’s natural resources has been finalized…

From: Roman Sheremeta — The deal over Ukraine’s natural resources has been finalized. I have read the latest version several times and believe that, as of now, it is a good deal for both Ukraine and the U.S.

For Ukraine, it is a much better agreement than the one originally proposed by the U.S. — no repayment of $500 billion and no transformation of Ukraine into an American colony.

The newly established joint Ukrainian-American fund will reinvest in Ukraine, signaling that the country is open for business and investment.

For the U.S., this is, first and foremost, a PR victory for Trump. He will tout it as the greatest deal of all time, marking a significant political win. His die-hard supporters will cheer.

The Ukrainian-American fund will likely be used to improve infrastructure needed for American investors to profit from resource and mineral extraction. It is also possible that the fund will finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.

As it stands, both Ukraine and the U.S. should benefit from the deal. However, a major drawback is that the agreement provides no security guarantees for Ukraine. In this regard, it is even weaker than the Budapest Memorandum.

The only sentence addressing Ukrainian security states: “The Government of the United States of America supports Ukraine’s efforts to obtain security guarantees needed to establish lasting peace.”
