Finland’s security and intelligence service is closely monitoring U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on Russia and Vladimir Putin, Finnish intelligence chief Juha Martelius told Reuters on March 5.
On Feb. 4, Finnish intelligence released its national security review, naming Russia as Finland’s biggest threat.
The report noted that once the war in Ukraine ends, Russia’s resources could shift to exert influence in other regions.
When asked by reporters if the United States could still be trusted as an intelligence ally, Finnish intelligence chief Juha Martelius confirmed that information-sharing continues as usual.
“This is a development we are closely monitoring, as are other European intelligence and security services allied with the United States,” he said.
Martelius also stated that Donald Trump’s closer ties with Russia have not yet impacted intelligence cooperation between the two nations.
“Should the U.S. shift its focus away from countering Russia, then it’s clear that every Western ally will need to explore new forms of cooperation and further enhance their own efforts,” he added.
