The majority of Ukrainians support increased military assistance for the country’s armed forces as the most effective and reliable security component of a lasting peace deal, Anton Hrushetsky, Executive Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) said on March 14, commenting on the results of a new sociological survey.
The survey, conducted from February 14 to March 4, was aimed at exploring the role of various parameters and their combinations, so-called “packages,” in a possible peace agreement. Five dimensional components were analyzed, including security guarantees, EU membership, control over territories, language policy, and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
A scenario in which “NATO membership is postponed for 10-20 years, but Kyiv receives large amounts of weapons (air defense, aircraft, tanks, etc.) gains the support of about 54% of Ukrainians, with 35% against it,” Hrushetsky said.
The deal, secured by a peacekeeping force and the promise of future NATO membership, is supported by 47%, while 43% strongly oppose it.
