History Claps Back:
“Uncomfortable facts” would be ok if they were facts. We could all agree if with Grenell and the Kremlin if we did not know Soviet, Ukrainian and U.S. history.
Let’s hear from the informed:
Steven Pifer, former US ambassador to Ukraine and nuclear weapons expert, responded by stating that Grenell is “flat wrong”.
“I helped negotiate Budapest Memorandum. Grenell is flat wrong. Nuclear warheads in Ukraine were ex-Soviet, not Russian. Warheads in storage were in sole Ukrainian custody. ICBMs [intercontinental ballistic missiles] and bombers were eliminated in Ukraine except small number sent to Russia for debt relief.”
One of Russia’s propaganda points is to adopt all things they think are “great” from Soviet times and then say that is Russian. You’ve heard some U.S. leaders say “Russia helped win WW II” (as opposed to the Soviet Army made up of Soviet countries) which shows a tendency for some to buy into this propaganda.
