Ash, one of Europe’s most respected scholars of Eastern European history and a leading figure at Oxford University — where he heads the European Studies Center — has in recent years stepped well beyond the typical bounds of academic life. He advises European and international aid efforts for Ukraine and is a vocal advocate for the country on the global stage. His perspective on what is arguably the bloodiest war of the 21st century is far from theoretical — he travels annually to cities in Ukraine, both in the rear and near the front lines.
