Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and National Police carried out a search on April 15 at the chancellery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in Kyiv, sources in law enforcement told NV.
The office, which sources described as “the Kremlin’s main lobbying arm” in Ukraine, is tied to senior UOC-MP official Metropolitan Antoniy Pakanich, who is reportedly the subject of the search.
“Investigators are conducting a search at the residence of Metropolitan Antoniy, who manages church affairs,” one law enforcement source told NV.
Sources added that new criminal charges are expected.
The search comes days after the SBU arrested a UOC-MP cleric in Donetsk Oblast on espionage charges. The man allegedly agreed to spy for Russia’s FSB in exchange for the evacuation of his family to Russia.
