The New York Times: Trump’s New Position on the War in Ukraine: Not My Problem.
After months of claiming that he was the only one who could end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours,” or “in a few weeks”, or “in 100 days,” or” very-very soon”, President Trump now appears to be walking away from the peace process entirely.
According to the New York Times, following a recent call with dictator putin, Trump told President Zelensky and European leaders that Ukraine and ruzzia would need to “find a solution themselves.” Just days earlier, he had been threatening new sanctions on ruzzia if it didn’t agree to a ceasefire. Now, those threats have vanished. One has to wonder why Trump doesn’t mind appearing so weak when he definitely holds “cards” :), like using stronger sanctions – those wouldn’t cost tax-payers anything.
It’s exactly what Putin wanted: an end to American pressure, a fractured NATO, and a green light to keep dragging out negotiations while escalating violence.
Even more disturbing, Politico reports that the United States opposed including any commitment to further support Ukraine in the upcoming G7 joint statement, and even pushed back against language that called ruzzia’s war illegal.
This is not the first time under the Trump administration that the U.S. has blocked strong language from G7 declarations about Ukraine — all in the name of trying to coax Putin into negotiations.
Meanwhile, ruzzia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities, abduct children, and commit war crimes. And the U.S. is now not only stepping back from leadership — it’s watering down global condemnation of an unprovoked, illegal war.
Trump has repeatedly claimed only he and putin have the power to make peace. But after being willing to give putin everything he asked for — including floating Ukraine’s NATO exclusion and surrendering occupied territories — Trump still walked away empty-handed. And now, he’s focused on what he calls the “tremendous opportunity” for large-scale trade with ruzzia after the war ends.
As former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink put it:
“Peace at any price is not peace at all — it is appeasement.”
Trump’s actions are not just an abandonment of Ukraine. They are a betrayal of the international order the U.S. helped build — one based on accountability, sovereignty, and the defense of democracy.
