6/15/2025 — Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous…

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 1207)

Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
and may you establish the righteous —
you who test the minds and hearts,
O righteous God!
My shield is with God,
who saves the upright in heart.
Psalm 7:9-10

We’ve had several nights without air raids, but the “break” is over, and we are getting cozy in our hallway as the monitor channels warn about up to 400 drones attacking Ukraine at night. I am so grateful that the Lord has provided us with a hallway large enough to set up three sleeping places (and there’s still room for our cat to run around). A few families we talked to after the previous attack said they barely have enough space to sit in their hallway, so they bring their kids (some of my students) there and sit awake until the attack is over.

As I sit here, I have the time to examine my heart. Am I relieved it’s summer break and the attack is not happening on a school night? Somewhat, because at least I could catch up on the missed sleep in the morning. At the same time, I am grateful for the need to be fully alert during the school year because it doesn’t leave me much time to process the insanity we live in. I know it’s too easy for me to lose it if I start focusing and dwelling on how everything makes me feel.
Thankfully, a teacher’s job is never done, and I have many plans and dreams for the summer. What a joy it is to be part of a team that dreams despite the crushing reality!

Meanwhile, my cat found her safe place on the floor next to my mattress. The night is quiet so far, at least for our part of Kyiv. May it remain so.
