Nearly 2,000 tons of harmful pollutants were released into the air over Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast as a result of massive Russian drone attacks from June 6 to 10, Ukraine’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reported on June 16.

The ministry said the Kyiv region became the epicenter of one of the most destructive drone bombardments of the war in June. Preliminary estimates place environmental damage at over UAH 5.7 million (about $140,000).

According to the ministry, each drone strike triggered uncontrolled emissions of hazardous substances into the atmosphere due to the combustion of fuel, building materials, plastics, and electronics.

“This isn’t just about infrastructure destruction — it’s a systematic assault on the environment, polluting the air and creating long-term health risks for Kyiv residents,” the statement read.

On the night of June 10, Kyiv experienced one of the largest-scale drone attacks since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Fires broke out across eight districts, and significant damage was reported.
