6/17/2025 — The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble…

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 1209)

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 9:9-10

It’s another loud night in Kyiv. There’s a report of a drone hitting an apartment building on the right bank. Several groups of drones attack Kyiv from different directions. Missiles are likely to also come because russian strategic bombers took off from one of the airfields.

A lot of times, if I am asleep during the attack, I can sleep through it. Lately, however, I am awake, as if staying awake could change something.

So as I lay here and listen to the sound of our air defense shooting down drones, I keep thinking about poppy flowers blooming in my grandma’s garden. We bought a seed mix last year and gave it a try. The narrow strip of the garden looked lush and colorful. In the fall, once the seeds were ripe, I made sure to grab a handful of poppyheads and crush and disperse them around the garden every time I went there. I wasn’t sure it would work, but I was confident I needed to try. This year, it’s not just the narrow strip that looks lush and colorful.
As I thought about these flowers, I realized that while the Bible encourages us to have faith the size of a mustard seed, sometimes it feels impossible. Sometimes a tiny poppyseed is all you have. But God doesn’t let even the tiniest faith go to waste. He is faithful to bring forth something beautiful as long as we are faithful.
