From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 1216)
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
Psalm 16:1
Our Lord is our refuge, especially on nights with drones and ballistic missiles. We don’t have an actual bomb shelter nearby, so as we go to sleep in our hallway, we trust the Lord will take care of us.
Last night, swarms of drones came over Kyiv from different directions. I listened to the sounds of gunfire until I fell asleep. At some point, there were no more drones. People started leaving their bomb shelters, and that’s when they launched ballistic missiles. One of the missiles destroyed a whole section of an apartment building. It went through all the floors and the basement.
I don’t remember the exact number of victims there, and I don’t want to check the news. Does it make a difference? Is there anything that could make it okay?
Russia is terrorizing Ukraine. They are deliberately hitting our apartment buildings and private houses to break our spirit. Those who claim to have gained sole victory over nazism in WWII now use the same technique of carpet bombing Hitler used to terrorize British cities. The strikes on civilians are no accidents.
At some point today, I froze for a second because, for just a moment, I thought these past three years (and eight years before that) were just a bad dream, a creation of sick imagination, a scary movie, because it could not and should not be true.
I read in one of the reports how a young man who survived the bombing of his apartment building said, “God must have preserved my life for a reason. I must find out what it is.”
What if we lived every day with the same purpose and realization?
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. ~ Ephesians 5:15-17
