The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Psalm 19:1

The air raid alert is spreading through Ukraine. I know it will take a lot of willpower to go to sleep without checking which directions the drones are coming from and if missiles are going to join. I don’t know if I have that willpower. And this urge doesn’t go away even if my family and I are safe.

I know that this anxiety only highlights my need to trust the Lord. The other day, I saw a story shared by a volunteer who helped people after the russian missile destroyed an apartment building in Kyiv. They were helping the neighbors repair windows or at least cover the window frames with plastic film. When they came to one of the apartments, they saw deformed window frames, a destroyed kitchen, and broken glass everywhere. The lady who lived there asked them to be extra careful around the windows. She showed them a small nest with eggs in it. She said the bird had already visited the nest after the missile strike, so she didn’t want her nest to be damaged.

Just think about it! The deadly mass pierces the floors all the way to the basement. The explosive wave shatters glass in neighboring apartment buildings and damages doors and window frames. Yet here is a bird’s nest with eggs. Unaffected. It is as if hidden in the shadow of God’s wings, which do not allow the destroyer to come over it. If God cares so much for this little bird and her nest, how much more precious are we to Him! I will hold on to this image and pray that God covers all of Ukraine with the shadow of His wings.
