Ukrainian lawmakers are drafting special legislation to govern the country’s first national elections after the war ends, Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said on June 28.

“We’re working on this bill because we’ll need a new law specifically regulating what we call postwar elections,” Stefanchuk said during a national telethon broadcast.

He noted that Ukraine faces numerous challenges once the war concludes—and the nature of those challenges depends on how and when the war ends.

“We’re preparing several foundational scenarios to ensure Ukrainians can exercise their fundamental constitutional right to vote,” he said. “And that must happen here in Ukraine.”

According to a joint poll released June 25, 57.6% of Ukrainians say elections should be held if negotiations with Russia lead to a ceasefire and the lifting of martial law.
