During a trip to Denmark, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the “Future of Ukraine” award to 11-year-old volunteer Jens Fogh Thomsen, according to the president’s post on X on July 3.
The Danish schoolboy, whose surprised reaction captured attention online, was recognized for his volunteer efforts.
According to Zelenskyy, Jens has been making and selling Easter decorations since last year, raising over 34,000 Danish kroner ($4,933). With these funds, he purchased school backpacks and supplies for Ukrainian children affected by the war. The president noted that Jens is the first foreigner to receive this award.
Footage of the ceremony showed the boy visibly surprised by the honor. Ukrainians online expressed admiration and gratitude for his compassion, with some noting that Jens appeared unprepared for the high-profile encounter.

“The boy’s eyes truly show it was a ‘SURPRISE’: wide and stunned, he didn’t know who was in the room until the last moment,” wrote social media user Serhiy Kolpakov in a comment.
