U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to immediately deliver 10 Patriot interceptor missiles, Axios reported on July 8, citing sources.

According to the outlet, Trump and his team are reluctant to provide large quantities of Patriot missiles, with the U.S. leader urging European allies to contribute more funds and materiel.

Axios noted that Trump’s shift in stance became clearer during a July 4 phone call with Zelenskyy.  

The U.S. president told his Ukrainian counterpart that he wants to support Ukraine’s air defenses but emphasized that Washington had to pause its latest weapons shipment to review its own stockpiles.

During the call, Trump committed to sending 10 Patriot interceptors—fewer than planned in the paused shipment—and promised to help find alternative supply channels.

Sources told Axios that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had called Trump prior to the Zelenskyy conversation, urging him to release the Patriot missiles that were halted en route to Ukraine.
