According to CNN, ruzzia is expected to launch an intensified summer offensive in the coming days or weeks, possibly involving up to 160,000 troops currently being amassed along the front lines. The report says the kremlin may try to take advantage of a 50-day pause before potential new U.S. sanctions are implemented. Kyril Giles of Chatham House noted that this “50-day window” gives moscow time to maneuver diplomatically — possibly to outsmart Washington once again with a move that Trump might readily embrace. “Trump’s latest extension of a deadline for putin,” Giles says, “simply prolongs Ukraine’s suffering for another arbitrary stretch of time.”
At the same time, The Economist reports that during this summer offensive, ruzzia is experiencing its heaviest losses in the entire war. Captured russian soldiers told Ukrainian defenders they were presented with this summer push as “the final breakthrough.” Putin is desperately trying to break Ukraine’s will — and appears willing to pay any human cost to do it. According to analysis, ruzzia’s recent casualty rates are the highest since the invasion began. Independent estimates suggest that ruzzian forces are losing 1,000–1,500 soldiers killed or wounded every single day.. This makes it the deadliest campaign for russia since the full-scale invasion began.
And yet, Ukraine continues to defend itself with courage. Despite the delays in U.S. weapons deliveries and the intensity of ruzzia’s push, moscow has failed to make any major gains. Over the past year, moscow has sacrificed one soldier for every 0.038 km² of land gained. At their current pace, it would take another 89 years for russia to occupy all of Ukraine. Even just to capture the remaining areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, they would need until February 2029.
This is the face of Putin’s “plan.” A delusional, bloody crawl — stretching years into the future. And still, Ukraine stands.
