The protests in Ukraine over the controversial bill targeting the powers of NABU and SAPO are legitimate and part of the country’s democratic process, a source in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office told Axios on July 22.
The source, described as close to Zelenskyy, downplayed the significance of the bill but acknowledged that opposition-led street protests were lawful and reflect democratic norms in Ukraine.
The source also argued that the two anti-corruption agencies have operated for several years “without much result.”
“Most corruption cases were uncovered by Ukraine’s SBU Security Service,” the source claimed.
Law No. 12414 and its implications
On July 22, Ukraine’s parliament passed bill No. 12414 in full — a measure Transparency International had previously slammed as an attempt to strip the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) of their independence.
