Democracy at Work!
After widespread protests against attempts to undermine the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions (NABU and SAPO), President Zelensky announced a new draft law — directly in response to public outcry. This is what he said, “I respect the opinion of society… People said: everything must be done according to the law. It was very important for me that we heard this clearly and responded accordingly. And we did.”
The most inspiring thing is many young people showed up to protest. They care. They are informed. They are active. And they’re shaping the future of this country with their voices and presence.
President’s change of position is not a sign of weakness — this is what a healthy democracy looks like. This is democracy in action.
The new bill has been registered and will go to a vote in Parliament. But protests continue — and rightly so — until the law is passed and signed by the President.
PS. The real heroes of this story are the Ukrainian people—those who, despite exhaustion, still find the energy, time, and courage to hold our leaders accountable. As for the leaders, they often drift from the right path when they start believing they can get away with it. Zelensky is no exception.
