7/28/2025 — Zelenskyy awards Hero of Ukraine title to fallen Lyut brigade commander Maksym Kazban

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star to Maksym Kazban, commander of the Lyut Joint Assault Brigade of the National Police, according to decree No. 551/2025 published on the Presidential websiteon July 26.

A police colonel was posthumously awarded a medal for personal courage and heroism in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for selfless service to the Ukrainian people.

“Maksym Oleksandrovych was not just a commander — he was a leader who went first. He was a shoulder on which thousands leaned. He inspired even when it was difficult. Under his leadership, Lut became a family fighting for Ukraine,” the National Police said in a statement.

Col. Maksym Kazban died July 22 in a road accident in Donetsk Oblast. He had been fighting since 2014 as part of the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. Since 2015, he served in the Security Service of Ukraine’s Special Operations Center “A.”

During the full-scale Russian invasion, Kazban took part in several key operations, including battles near the village of Chornobaivka in Kherson Oblast. In September 2024, he was appointed commander of the National Police’s Joint Assault Brigade Lyut, which fought Russian invaders in the Toretsk direction under his leadership.
