8/4/2025 — “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you…”

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 1255)

Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22

The rescue operation after the attack on Kyiv I mentioned before ended today. It turned out to be the deadliest one yet. As I read about the death toll, I try to think of those 31 people (including 5 children) as a number. It is easier this way. I compare that number to the average number of people living in one apartment building or the estimated number of casualties in general, and try to convince myself that it’s not that bad. But then those numbers turn into real people.

I read about a gifted neurologist who worked at a respected clinic. About a female officer of the patrol police. I read about an IT engineer, his 18-year-old daughter, and their dog. There’s a preschool teacher and her two sons – her husband and the youngest, 10-year-old, were spending a night in a village. There’s a young couple with their 2-year-old son. I read about a coffee expert and her two daughters – they first moved to Kharkiv from Donetsk, and then had to leave Kharkiv in 2022 in search of a safer place. Her husband is fighting on the frontline. Different people, different lives, same horrible ending.

I know that the Lord is weeping with us, but I beg Him to arise and destroy those who cause this pain.
But you, O God, will cast them down
into the pit of destruction;
men of blood and treachery
shall not live out half their days.
But I will trust in you.
Psalm 55:23
