Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys called for adopting Ukraine’s practices for countering air threats and drones to enhance regional security, following a virtual meeting on Aug. 8 with counterparts from Poland, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine, local outlet LRT reports.

Budrys emphasized the importance of coordinated regional efforts to effectively secure airspace. 

The diplomat highlighted that air security is a pressing issue for NATO’s eastern flank countries and their neighbors, as the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine spill beyond borders, threatening civilian safety and critical infrastructure.

Last week, Budrys discussed recent drone incidents in Lithuania with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, addressing the need for measures to protect the Alliance’s airspace. 

On July 28, a Gerbera drone carrying two kilograms of explosives entered Lithuanian airspace and was later found at a training ground in the Jonava district. This marked the second violation in a month, following a Gerbera drone without explosives crossing from Belarus on July 10.
