Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is likely to take part in some form in the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, CBS Newsreported on Aug. 9.
Trump announced earlier that the meeting with Putin is scheduled for Aug. 15, 2025, in Alaska.
Ukraine has not issued an official comment on the announcement. However, CBS News sources said Zelenskyy could be involved in the talks “in some way.”
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said the Alaska meeting will focus on “ways to reach a lasting settlement of the war in Ukraine.”
The choice of Alaska as the venue has not been explained. The region once belonged to the Russian Empire, whose main interest there was fur seal and sea otter hunting.
Due to the difficulty of maintaining the colony and declining profits, the Russian Empire considered selling Alaska a favorable option. In 1867, it sold the territory to the United States for $7.2 million in gold — a deal regarded as one of the most profitable in U.S. history.
