European leaders are seeking to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump before his upcoming meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Bloomberg reported on Aug. 8, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
The White House did not immediately respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment on whether such talks are planned.
As part of ongoing negotiations between U.S. and Russian officials, Putin is reportedly demanding that Ukraine cede all of its remaining territory in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as well as Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, in exchange for a ceasefire and the start of talks on a longer-term settlement, Bloomberg said.
Such a deal would require Kyiv to give up territory still under Ukrainian control, effectively handing Moscow a victory it has failed to achieve militarily since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
If the process moves forward, the question of territory “has to be on the negotiating table” alongside security guarantees for Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in an Aug. 10 interview with ABC News. He suggested this could involve Ukraine acknowledging a loss of control over parts of its territory without formally renouncing sovereignty.
