A 19-year-old woman, after reaching adulthood, decided to leave temporarily occupied Donetsk for Ukrainian-controlled territory, sharingher journey with public broadcaster Suspilne Donbas on Aug. 10.
Karina (name changed) sought help from the Ukrainian Child Rights Network to escape Donetsk. She recalled discussing her plans to live independently with her mother.
“I brought up moving out or leaving with my mom. She threatened to break my legs if I went to ‘Ukropia,’ saying she’d catch me and no one would see me again,” Karina said.
Karina described life under occupation, where schools taught not only Russian but a subject called “native tongue,” filled with propaganda.
“They talk about how ‘amazing’ Russia is, why the Russian language is ‘mighty,’ praising Russian writers who died from vodka or shootouts while belittling Ukrainian ones,” she added.
