President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders, and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed potential security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on NATO’s Article 5 during their talks, CNN reported on Aug. 16, citing European officials.
According to the report, NATO itself would not be directly involved in providing these guarantees to Ukraine.
The source added that the precise details of the U.S. proposal remain unknown, and it is still unclear how the guarantees would be implemented.
“President Trump does not want to commit American troops or resources to Ukraine’s defense, although European countries have proposed creating a ‘security assurance force’ for Ukraine, which they say cannot function without U.S. ‘support,’” CNN quoted its source as saying.
The offer was later confirmed by a source speaking to Interfax-Ukraine.
“As one of the proposed security guarantees for Ukraine, the American side offered what it described as a ‘non-NATO Article 5–type’ guarantee — reportedly agreed upon with Putin,” the source said.
According to the source, White House officials first raised the offer in a call with Zelenskyy, then repeated it during a joint call with European leaders.
