Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Ukraine cannot reclaim Crimea but could “almost immediately” end the war started by Russia in a post on X on Aug. 18.

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine should not have surrendered Crimea in 2014 and should have fought for it as it did for Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv in 2022.

“We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably,” the Ukrainian president wrote.

“And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack.”
