9/3/2025 — Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all the day…

The picture is from our basement classroom.

Be gracious to me, O Lord,
for to you do I cry all the day.
Show me a sign of your favor,
that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
Psalm 86:3, 17

Even though we started school last week, for most public schools, today is their first actual day of classes, and it started with an air raid. For three hours and thirty-nine minutes, Kyiv was attacked with drones, and at least one was shot down in our part of the city.

We spent those 3 hours 39 minutes in the basement, in a relatively small room with 27 lively and restless kids. They studied, played games, had snacks and lunch, and thankfully were incredibly patient the whole time. And I was growing more and more angry. Angry that our kids have to be locked up in the basement instead of enjoying their lessons and the beautiful day outside. Angry that it’s impossible to teach all the fun things we had planned (even though our basement has rooms and desks, several grades have to share a room, so we have five upper grades studying together in one room with five different teachers). Angry that, most likely, it’s just the beginning of the fall terrorism, when once again they will try to destroy our power grid. Angry that, in addition to interrupted sleep at night, we have no respite during the day. Angry, agitated, and exhausted.

You should have heard the deafening squeals of joy once the air raid ended. The kids fled into the yard and spent a good 30 minutes running around and being kids.

As the nighttime approaches, there are reports of drones coming in the Kyiv direction and a possibility of a missile attack, and my son is disappointed that once again he has to go to sleep in our apartment hallway instead of his bed.

Lord, put them to shame and help us!
