Ukraine’s anti-graft agencies have accused Security Service Gen. Illia Vitiuk of amassing a fortune through illicit enrichment — charges his service dismissed as “revenge” for July raids on NABU detectives — as activist Vitalii Shabunin likened the escalating feud to a war within Ukraine’s own security forces in an interview with Radio NV.

How should we understand this? Does the SBU really believe the National Anti-Corruption Bureau is simply taking revenge on the Security Service?

You read the quote. I don’t know what the SBU believes, but it is persuading the public of exactly that.

Now let’s stick to the facts.

Fact one. Journalists at Slidstvo.Info investigated the apartment attributed to Vitiuk a year and a half ago, not in July of this year. Since then NABU and SAPO have been investigating that case. And in October of last year, this elite property — luxury apartments priced at 21 million hryvnias ($508,000) — was seized by the High Anti-Corruption Court as part of that proceeding. Those are the facts.

So the SBU’s claim that this investigation — this suspicion — is revenge for the events of this July is a lie. Moreover, the suspicion against Vitiuk was being prepared before those July raids by the SBU, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation against NABU officers. The SBU’s messaging about revenge is a lie.
