From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 1297)
O you who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 97:10
On Tuesday, during the interview for the Schuman Talk, Jeff Fountain asked me what scares me. I was surprised by this question, but I said that I am afraid that the war will spread beyond the territory of Ukraine, and the countries that enjoy the false sense of security now would need to experience war because russia wouldn’t stop unless it is stopped. Several hours later, we went to sleep in the hallway, and I was waking up through the night to check my phone for updates. When I saw that many drones went into Poland, and not just crossed the border but went deeper into the country, I felt scared. In a couple of hours, when groups of cruise missiles entered Ukrainian airspace and headed west, I kept checking for the updates, and the closer they got to the border, the more I felt the need to pray an unexpected prayer, “God, let them stay in Ukraine.”
The drones going into Poland were no mistake. Back in July, our air defense shot down drones with Polish and Baltic SIM cards, which means they had been preparing for the attack. This time, it was just a provocation with surveillance and decoy drones, but it helped the russians find the locations and procedures of the European defense. And, of course, it was yet another test of the boundaries.
Through all of that, I hope this insane terrorist attack on yet another European country (because that’s exactly what it was) will become a wake-up call for those in the slumber of false security. I hope it will help all the countries join their efforts and stop the bully. I read about some urges to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons so that drone and missile facilities in russia are destroyed, and that would be a nice first step toward improving the general security of Europe.
