Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he does not intend to lead the country in peacetime and promised to ask Ukraine’s parliament to organize elections if a ceasefire is reached, he told Axios on Sept. 25.

He made the remarks when asked whether he would consider his work complete after the war and if he was prepared to step aside once peace is achieved.

“If we end the war with the Russians? Yes, I’m ready not to run [for president again — Ed.]. Because elections are not my goal. I very much wanted to be with my country, to help it in a very difficult period. That’s exactly what I wanted. My goal is to end the war,” he said.

The president also answered “yes” when asked if, hypothetically, “tomorrow” Russian dictator Vladimir Putin agreed to a ceasefire for three, six months, or another period, he would support holding elections in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy acknowledged that security conditions and Ukraine’s constitution pose challenges, but he believes elections would be possible.
