Ukraine’s Institute of National Memory published a list of 51 historical figures and artists it says are not tainted by the legacy of Russian imperial rule.

The document, posted on the institute’s official website on Oct. 7, includes writers, artists, researchers, government officials, military officers, engineers, and other notable political or cultural figures.

Among those listed are writer and playwright Nikolai Gogol, romantic painter Ivan Aivazovsky, symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel, realist painter Ilya Repin, and linguist Vladimir Dal.

Also on the list are Spanish naval commander José de Ribas, French general Louis-Alexandre de Langeron, and Duke Armand de Richelieu, all of whom at various times contributed to the construction or administration of Odesa. The list also features inventor and state official Vasily Karazin, founder of Kharkiv University; biologist Ilya Mechnikov; surgeon Nikolai Pirogov; prose writer and playwright Anton Chekhov; monumental painter Karl Bryullov; and writer and publicist Alexander Herzen.

“The lists are compiled on the basis of expert assessments by the commission formed under paragraph two of Article 6 of the Law of Ukraine on the Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy and by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance,” the institute said in a statement.

“Submissions were made on the institute’s initiative or at the request of governmental bodies, legal entities, and citizens.”

The institute said the list is not exhaustive and will be expanded based on future decisions, findings, clarifications, and recommendations from the expert commission.
