“Putin’s rule is devastating for Russia, and I believe it will lead to the collapse of the Russian Empire, which is long overdue,” says Garry Kasparov, former world chess champion, leader of the Russian opposition, and chairman of the Renew Democracy Initiative, in the latest episode of On the Record.
The exiled opposition activist goes on to say that “Russia is going into the abyss” and that the country must find a way out, since there is “no room for empires.” Only Ukraine’s victory, he adds, will bring freedom for Russia.
Kasparov points out that Vladimir Putin is not the core of the problem. “It’s an imperial virus, and it’s much older than Putin,” he tells Adam Jasser. “It’s much older than the Soviet Union. It has survived and evolved for centuries in the minds of Russians. And unless we can eradicate this virus from Russian society—the public at large—nothing will change.”
But Putin is not the only threat to Russia’s freedom. There is also China. “Moscow and Putin are owned by China,” Kasparov warns. “Russia will soon become its satellite.”
