From Jamie Peipon: Russia expected that their tanks would parade on Kyiv’s main thoroughfare within three days of the beginning of the invasion. Six months in and they are finally getting their parade. In the picture below, you can see preparations on Kreschatyk street in downtown Kyiv for the celebration of Independence Day on the 24th. Traditionally, a military parade would be a main fixture of the celebration. Indeed, a military parade is being prepared, but it is a motionless parade of destroyed Russian vehicles that is currently being set up. Of course, Ukraine’s military vehicles and weapons are a bit tied up at the moment so this type of parade will have to do. Ukraine has also just about perfected “the art of the troll” and this parade will fit perfectly within their portfolio of activities that get under the occupier’s skin.
While Kyiv’s celebrations will be limited to this “parade,” the city of Kharkiv will be shut down for 36 hours leading into Independence Day. The city is just too close to the border and has been the constant target of Russian attacks since the first days of the invasion. It is a sober reminder about how real the danger is for this embattled city.
Off in Moscow, a pro-Putin TV commentator and daughter of the manknown is “the brain of Putin” was killed in a car bombing. The woman’s name was Daria Dugina. Her father’s name is Alexander Dugin and he is a rabidly nationalist philosopher whose political ideology deals with restoring the power of the Russia throughout the world. He has been a major supporter of Putin’s war in Ukraine. Daria was on her way home from a festival that she had attended with her dad. Conspiracy theories abound. Was she the target, or was it her dad? Was it Ukrainian special forces (almost certainly not)? Was it Putin himself sending a warning? Was it irritated FSB (KGB) agents or angry oligarchs? Or was it the “National Republican Army” that has claimed responsibility but no one has ever heard of? All of these hot takes are floating around out there, but I haven’t seen any of them accompanied with any type of concrete evidence. What is known is that car bombings are not a common occurrence in Moscow and that many there will be waiting for answers with bated breath.
“The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit;
he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
He plots trouble while on his bed;
he sets himself in a way that is not good;
he does not reject evil.
Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
your judgments are like the great deep;
man and beast you save, O LORD.”
