1/2/2023 – War update and commentary: Drone attack on New Year

Jamie Peipon (Day 311): In the picture you can see one of the solutions created for shooting down Iranian drones over Ukraine. Because of the cost of anti-air missiles compared to the cost of the Iranian drones, that is not the most cost-effective way to bring them down. One new strategy are these highly mobile units that consist of a machine gun mounted in the back of a pickup truck paired with a spotlight. Apparently, these units have been quite effective.

As the clock struck midnight last night in Ukraine, a drone attack was being prepared and launched by russia. There was little doubt that they would use a day set aside for celebration to try and inflict more harm, especially on civilians. The sirens were blaring in Kyiv by around 12:40 AM. The normal time frame for russia’s attacks are the early morning hours. It isn’t a mistake that this attack was timed for just after midnight. One of the drones had been written on by the russians who launched them. It read in russian: “Happy New Year! – Boom!” It is a very sick people who can lightheartedly joke about the murdering of civilians as they attempt to carry that murder out. Explosions were heard in Kyiv. The russians launched 45 Iranian drones and all 45 of them were brought down by Ukraine’s air defenses. There were missiles also fired, many of which were brought down, but some did reach their targets. 2023 was less than an hour old by the time the first Ukrainian civilian casualties occurred.

But not all was peaceful back in moscow. Red Square and other central areas were closed off to celebrations. This would normally be the epicenter of celebration. But yesterday there were no fireworks or outdoor concerts taking place. Some videos emerged of people getting beaten up by police with others standing around smiling and taking video. It appeared as if they didn’t even know what they were being arrested for. Why would anyone want to lay their life down in order “to protect” (as they claim) such a miserable existence?

There were also reports that the kremlin called in 1800 additional air defense personnel for the occasion. It is fascinating to observe how they have backed themselves into this corner. No one wanted to attack russia. NATO, the US, Ukraine… nobody wanted to attack russia. NATO still won’t enter the war within Ukraine’s borders much less. But they’re now buying in to and manipulated by their own propaganda and are living in the prison of their own self-induced paranoia. It is no surprise that a pre-New Year poll in russia showed that the vast majority of citizens were not feeling the “New Year mood” (their equivalent of “Christmas spirit”).

Ukraine’s armed forces have already been busy on this first day of 2023. They struck a large base in the town of Makiivka in the occupied region of Donetsk. Both russian and Ukrainian sources are reporting the attack but there is still confusion about the number of casualties. All are estimating that the attack took out several hundred russians. Most seem to be estimating that at least 600 russian soldiers were there with hundreds being killed and hundreds more wounded in the strike.

In another major development for Ukraine, pictures surfaced today of Ukrainian-made artillery ammunition being used. Some of the earliest strikes of the war took out facilities that Ukraine used to produce and distribute their own ammunition. The fact that they are getting their own shells produced and delivered to the front lines, despite the ongoing pressure of constant attacks, is a remarkable feat. This comes as russian supply appears to be dwindling. In July, russia’s artillery shelling peaked at 60,000 shells fired in ONE DAY. They are now firing less than 20,000 daily and are predicted to be facing major shortages by March.

“Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
let the hills sing for joy together
before the LORD, for he comes
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.”
