1/15/2023 – Odesa: A Church making a Difference

Admin: Snezhana is the wife of Pastor George Kadian in Odesa. She helped with the crisis in Kraków, Poland, earlier in the war, and now serves again in Odesa.

From Snezhana: As the reports say there are 8 million Ukrainians staying in Europe, mostly women with kids. But many stayed in Ukraine. Who are these people and why did they stay? Obviously, it’s the male half of the population. But it’s not them I want to talk about today.

There are many single mothers with their kids. Some of them are widows of those who died on the war field. Some are those who got divorced earlier, some – already during the war, some have broken relationships and don’t live together. We have a saying “Where it is thin, it breaks there”, meaning when there’s disaster, it reveals and worsens all hidden problems. So because of the war many couples cannot manage their relationships.

We are a small church in the northern part of Odesa. When the war had started we were looking for options to help and began a humanitarian aid ministry, supporting people in our area. Who аre these people in need? Two groups of people – pensioners and single mothers. I focus on the second group. These women decided to stay in Ukraine for various reasons: a lack of courage to go to foreign countries without language, absence of friends abroad, fear of the unknown, and sometimes they have old and very sick parents they have to take care of. Single mothers are in the most stressful situation because some of them can’t afford a full time job having small kids and no spouse to share responsibilities with.

Usually at this time of the year there are a lot of events for kids dedicated to Christmas, but not nowadays… Our church decided to make a Christmas celebration for the kids. It was pretty challenging for such a small church like ours because of the lack of human resources. Many people left abroad, some are fighting in the war, some people are saddened by the loss of loved ones.

So we prepared and held this event with 5 church members. And it worked! We had 26 kids and their parents who had never been to such a church event. So we had a unique opportunity to share the Gospel with them. Everyone was happy and pleased. All parents and kids sang together, solved the quizzes and forgot about the war for a few hours. We even had power on till the end of the meeting. Praise the Lord!

Now we face an important question. How can we help these people? Not only physically but also emotionally and further more spiritually? What can we do with a small number of people?

Pastor George

Please pray to our Lord for our wisdom in this ministry that we’d be able to serve those people the way Jesus did, feeding their bodies and souls. And also pray for He to raise new leaders who would be willing to serve people and to spread the love of God’s Kingdom.

  1. Our Father in heaven:
    Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is on heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom, power and glory, now and forever.
