From Doug Shepherd in L’viv: For some who have asked about the spelling of the capital of Ukraine.
The spelling “Kiev” is based on the the RUSSIAN transliteration of the UKRAINIAN capital. It’s not about “English pronunciation”
“Kiev” represents Russian colonization & oppression of Ukraine.
“Kyiv” shows recognition and respect for UA freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
Everything is better when it is free from Russia.
