3/5/2023 – The city that is no more

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 374):

Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!
Psalm 74:3

I stumbled upon pictures of Maryinka today. I’ve never been there, but I remember this name was often used in war reports from 2014-2015. This small town with a population of about 10,000 people was (was! what a horrible tense to use!) located in the Donetsk region, some 20 miles (34 km) from Donetsk, on the main road from Donetsk to Zaporizhzhia. There were intense fights for the city when Russia started its crawling occupation of the Donetsk region, but the town returned under Ukraine’s control in 2015. The fighting resumed in the spring of 2022. The Russian army couldn’t take control of the city, so they leveled it to the ground. No building or tree was left unharmed. As of now, no civilians remain in the city.

Arise, O God, defend your cause;
remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
Do not forget the clamor of your foes,
the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!
Psalm 74:22-23

  1. “My wound aches,” said Frodo, “and the memory of darkness is heavy on me. Are there not things, Gandalf, that cannot ever be wholly healed?”
    “Alas, it is so,” said Gandalf.

  2. Rev.21 “I [John] saw a new heaven and a new earth… and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men… there shall be no more death, sorrow, crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.’ And he said to me ‘Write, for these words are faithful and true.’ “
